Recognizing women by celebrating International Women’s Day

Info

Women’s Day- a day to celebrate and embrace womanhood– was observed at Umsawriang Village. This was the first Women’s Day event organized within the community. This event brought together numerous Self-Help Groups from four communities (Umsawriang, Syllei-U-Lar, Umktieh and Nongrah) to celebrate their achievements through a variety of activities such as dancing, singing, and plays.

One feature of the event was that the women farmers took the lead and treated the entire program as their own. As part of the event, prominent figures were invited to attend, and community leaders were gathered to participate in a role play depicting the issues women face and how they can assist.

It was stated by one of the village leaders that, the Women’s Day program is unique, and it will be celebrated annually. Speakers encouraged women to take on leadership roles in their communities, explaining that women are capable in many aspects. In spite of the fact that the organization had stepped back from leading the program, it still ran smoothly under the leadership of women farmers. This event attracted 130 participants in total.
