Child Sexual Abuse is a very serious problem and there has been an increase in the number of crime against children in our State. There is a need to increase public awareness on the issue and encourage people to prevent sexual abuse from happening.
There is saying that “Art is a powerful tool of communication”. To mark the “World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse” on November 19, we engaged grassroots comics to raise awareness on the issue of Child Sexual Abuse. We trained young and passionate social workers from Martin Luther Christian University on comics power on the theme ‘Child Abuse’ a week before the 19th and we collected amazing art work with intense messages.
We have them all printed and installed them across the corridor of one of the Government Offices in Shillong with an aim to spread awareness among adults passing through the office without having to speak and lecture. The youth stood next to their comics and shared their stories some of the people who came forward and have a read. Our reach out was limited however, the grassroots comics power installation has been an amazing approach in creating awareness on issue of Child Sexual Abuse and its prevention. The program witnessed the active participation of young minds who are determined to contribute towards social cause.
